Belvedere Castle is a 19th-century stone castle sits atop Vista Rock, the second highest natural elevation in the Park. It is located in mid-park at 79th St.
From the castle's tower; you will find beautiful views of Central Park and the city. When this castle was build views of Delcorte Theatre, and of a rectangular reservoir was seen which is now replaced by Green Lawn. Belvedere castle also houses the Henry Luce Nature Observatory, which has collections of natural history artifacts like skeletons, exhibits on birds and other wildlife found in the Park, and also has microscopes and telescopes.
The castle used to house the New York Meteorological Observatory, which was taken over by the United States Weather Bureau in 1912. It still serves as a weather station. Besides offering breathtaking views the Castle is also the favorite haunt of many of Central Park’s dedicated bird watchers, a great place to catch a glimpse of hawks, kestrels, etc.
