The holiday season is celebrated with the most favorite and largest free community festival Balboa Park December Nights in San Diego featuring sparkling lights, theatrical and musical entertainment, with exotic food and crafts from around the world.
In the spirit of the holidays, Museums are kept open for visitors free of charge from 5.00 to 9.00 p.m. Balboa Park December Nights is celebrated for the 31st consecutive year on Friday, December 5, 5:00-10:00 p.m. and Saturday, December 6, noon-10:00 p.m. and it is expected to attract more than 300,000 visitors. December Nights will be celebrated at 1549 El Prado, San Diego.
The Barona Band of Mission Indians will have a unique cultural element to the events with “My Ancestors' Village” which would be the re-creation of a traditional Native American village within the center of Balboa Park.
The Cascades Holiday Marketplace will exhibit crafts, foods and entertainment from around the world and it is located at Fountain Plaza which is adjacent to the Reuben H. Fleet Science Center and the San Diego Natural History Museum
The traditional Christmas on the Prado, this will have the Balboa Park’s historic Moreton Bay Fig Tree illuminated with a custom and artistic holiday design provided by The Old Globe. The tree will be decorated with merry and colorful lights.
More than 817 acres of the park was burned in a devastating fire, destroying the bird sanctuary. The park was repaired and restored with some areas still closed for public.
Millennium Park has a Cycle Center which is a heated and air conditioned indoor bicycle parking facility built by the city of Chicago and now sponsored by McDonald's hence now named as McDonald's Cycle Center.
The Botanical Building is one of the largest wood lath structures in the world. It has many tropical plants and exotic seasonal flowers in this lovely space. A Lily pond is situated to the south of this building.
